Community Pot Luck and Dance Friday May 8th 21st Century Program supports Jeff Co Food Share

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Jeffco Food Share will benefit from the efforts of the 21st Century Community Learning Center students and staff. May 4th through 8th they will be helping with a school-wide food drive at the Elementary School, followed by a community dance and pot-luck on Friday May 8th.

Jeffco Food Share was officially organized in 1987. The food bank was created by the Rev. John Cook, former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Boulder, his wife Elsie, and a handful of concerned citizens as an emergency assistance program to provide nutritious and adequate food to those in need.

The primary reasons people come to the food bank are unemployment, medical bills, utility bills, and lack of money. Jeffco Food Share serves all age groups and families of various sizes. The need for the food bank is genuine, they provided meals to 99 separate households in North Jefferson County in 2008, and the need is growing.

Jeffco Food Share tries to provide foods for a balanced diet within the constraints of non-perishable food items. Meat is also provided. Jeffco Food Share also distributes Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets in addition to our monthly service. Food donations are vital, but financial donations are critical. The money used to purchase the food items that are needed.

Jeffco Food Share is located in the basement of the First Baptist Church at 107 W. Hauser, in Boulder. It is open to anyone in need every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 12:00 noon through 3:00 p.m. The only restriction is food can be provided just once a month to a family.

Hunger and/or the lack of food can happen to anyone for many reasons, and that is why we as individuals and as a community need to be willing to help our friends, neighbors and strangers through their difficult times.

Families are encouraged to bring to the Elementary School non-perishable items during the food drive week. Friday evening will start with a community-wide pot-luck. Persons with the last name starting with A to H bring a side dish, I to P bring a main dish, and Q to Z bring a dessert to share. From 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday May 8th, the dance will feature local musicians and family fun for all. The cost will be a non-perishable food item or $2.00 that will go to Jeffco Food Share.

Feb 6 is Give Kids a Smile Day

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

February 6th is Give Kids a Smile Day. This is day when dental offices across the country donate their time and talents to children in need of dental care. Last year Helena was the only town in the entire country with a 100% participation rate amongst dentists. We served over 300 children last year. Because of the great response by the community, the American Dental Association is sending a reporter to Helena to document the event here. Unfortunately, we only have 30 kids signed up this year. We really need to get the word out, so we can help as many children as possible. Many dentists are seeing children on other days of the month also, so February 6th isn’t the only day the event happens. If you know any children (through age 18) who need dental care and could benefit from this day, please, please have their parents contact Kevin Rencher’s office 449-0189 right away. We want you to pass this message on the anyone who might know of kids in need.

Thanks so much for your help!! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! Kathryn Sealey, DDS

21st Century Community Learning Center Wins $10,000 Grant

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

The Horizons Northwest Area Foundation Community Action Grant contributed $10,000 to the 21st Century Community Learning Center. The Boulder Monitor reported the story completely in its Dec 31, 2008 issue. Jan Anderson wrote: “A Rocky Mountain community where frosts and snowfalls can and have come in evry month of the year might seem an unlikely spot to teach gardening.
But that is exactly what is happening in Boulder, and the fruits of the garden are helping relieve poverty and enrich the community….
Germinated by the Boulder 21st Century Community Learning Center, a program orignally funded by a five-year federal grant that has since expired, the gardening project has ambitious goals. Those include:
*teaching community members to raise their own food and to preserve the produce;
*planting trees that will bear fruit for years to come; *instilling pride and cooperation in the participants; *underscoring the importance of community service; *supporting the local food pantry, Jeffco Food share; *improving nutrition with fresh producelocally grown; *and activating ‘the stepping-stones to a stronger and healthier community, which in turn will help decrease the poverty level in Boulder. “…..
Organizers said in their grant application that won the $10,000 They will measure the success of the program by the number o community members involved and the pounds of food donated.
A more telling measure of success, though might be less tangible - gauged by the chatteringlaughter of the budding gardeners as they bring in the harvest.”
Thank you Jan Anderson for your wonderful news coverage.
